With Smart Edit, you can quickly make changes to multiple values in a numerical column. Rather than change each value individually, you select all of the values you want to change, and then use Smart Edit to add, subtract, multiply or divide the existing cell values with a number you specify.
To apply a Smart Edit follow these steps:
Select all of the cells that you want to edit in one action.
Make sure you only select cells in one column - Smart Edit can only be used on one (numeric) column at a time.
You might find it easier to select the values you want to change if you filter the grid first (see Filters).
In the Smart Edit popup, use the combo-box to choose the type of mathematical change you want to make. You can choose between Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division.
In the field next to the combo-box, enter the value for the change. For example, if you want to multiply the existing cell value by 4, enter 4 in the field.
In the Preview Results panel, you can see what effect the proposed change will have on the selected cell values. You can also see if the change will break a Cell Validation rule.
If no validation rules are broken the 'Apply to Grid' button is green and all edits are ticked as valid
If the change will break a cell validation rule, but the rule can be overridden, the Apply to Grid button is orange and has a warning icon. Any rows that triggers this warning also have an orange warning button.
If the change will break a cell validation rule and the rule cannot be overridden, the Apply to Grid button is unavailable.
Click Apply to Grid.
If your changes are valid, the selected cell values will update.
If your changes are invalid, but can be overridden, you are given a choice. Click OK to apply the changes and ignore the cell validation rules or click Cancel to abort.
Smart Edit provides a toolbar control to make it easy to use the function without having to open a popup.
To use the toolbar simply select the cells you want to update, make sure the correct operation is selection and click the Apply button.
